Everybody does it – comparing what the inside of our home looks like to the pictures of homes in lifestyle magazines. But what we need to realise is that all of those photos are staged for the photo shoot and don’t actually look like that in everyday life.
Rest easy though, here are some quick, easy and budget friendly ways to get your own home interior looking good.
First… What Do You Like?
First you need to look at your room and note down what your really like about it. For example, think about the colour, the furniture, the fittings, carpets, rugs, pictures, ornaments, the amount of light it gets through the windows etc etc.
Make a list and talk about it with your partner or whoever else is involved. Come with your list of ‘likes’.
Then… What Don’t You Like?
After that, make a list of the five top things you don’t like about it.
Once that list is complete, look through it and start working on the easy fixes that may be things such as:
- moving or replacing furniture
- painting a wall
- adding or replacing blinds
- sewing up some new cushion covers
- changing or removing ornaments, lamps and so on
- Storage and layout are often the culprits so look at how you can improve them
For Your Bigger Ideas
For more expensive or time consuming fixes to your home interior, start a savings plan and a mood board. Use the mood board to organise your ideas into groups to make sure that you like a particular colour or style of decorating before you actually spend money on it.
Let these bigger ideas sink in and be sure to talk about them before making any kind of investment. Buying something that ends up disappointing you can be very annoying and a waste of money.
